Obtaining A Malta Student Visa – Application, Requirements And More

If you intend to study in Malta, you will most likely need to apply for a Malta student visa. The student visa allows you to live, study, and work (part-time) in a beautiful destination like Malta while finishing your studies.

Do I Need a Visa to Study in Malta?

Everyone who is not from an EU/EEA nation or Switzerland needs a visa to study in Malta. If you are exempt from a Schengen visa, you may be eligible to pursue a short study course (up to three months) without a visa. However, for full-time degree courses such as BA and MA (which last more than three months), any non-EU/EEA/Swiss person need a Malta student visa.

Note: EU/EEA/Swiss citizens can study and live in Malta without a visa for any duration of time.

Malta Student Visa Application Process

To apply for a Malta student visa, you must contact the Maltese embassy, consulate, or a visa application office in your country. Then, you must:

  • Schedule an appointment for the submission of a visa application.
  • Collect all the required documents for a Malta student visa. See “Supporting Documents for Malta Student Visa Application” below.
  • On the day of your appointment, submit the application form, fee payment, and other requested documents. Make sure you fill out the application form completely and sign it at the end.

Within four weeks, you will receive a text message or an email from the embassy with the response to your visa application process.

After Entering Malta with a Student Visa

You must apply for a Maltese temporary residence permit within three months of entering Malta on a student visa. To apply for a student residence permit in Malta, fill out the Identity Malta Online Application form. You will be able to stay in Malta for more than a year if you get a residence permit.

EU/EEA/Swiss citizens only need to obtain a registration certificate within three months after arriving in Malta.

Supporting Documents for Malta Student Visa Application

To apply for a student visa in Malta, submit these documents:

  • Valid passport. The passport must be valid when applying with at least two blank pages.

  • Two passport-size photos. Photos must be passport-sized with colour and a bright background.
  • Letter of acceptance from the university. A letter proof that you have been accepted at the university that you have applied to, including the start and end time of the study year.
  • Proof of financial requirements. As an international student in Malta, you must prove you have enough income to support yourself for each month of your studies. The requirement for international students is 75% of the minimum wage in Malta. In 2022, the minimum monthly wage in Malta was €792.3, which means as an international student you should have at least €594/month.
  • Health insurance. Your health insurance must be valid within the whole Schengen Area and must cover at least €30,000 if you face any medical problem.
  • Language test. Document proof that you have passed the language test for Malta.

How Long Does It Take to Get a Malta Student Visa

A Maltese student visa takes four weeks to process. The processing period can be considerably longer, 8-9 weeks, depending on the circumstance and the time you apply. The processing time begins the day your application form is submitted to the embassy or consulate. The embassy will send you a message with the outcome of your visa application.

How Long Can I Stay in Malta With a Student Visa?

A Malta student visa is issued for a maximum of 365 days. If your study course will take longer than one year, then you must apply for a residence permit after you enter Malta. The residence permit can be renewed for the entire duration of you studies.

How Can I Stay in Malta After I Graduate?

You can stay in Malta after your graduation if you find a job. However, after being employed, you have to apply for a Malta work permit so you can be a legal resident.

If you don’t have a job yet, you can extend your student visa for six months while looking for a job in Malta.

Can I Work in Malta With a Student Visa?
