Here Are The Top 10 African Countries With The Lowest Crime Rates
Africa is distinguished by its unparalleled beauty, cultural richness, and untapped potential. Africa offers a diverse spectrum of experiences, from the Serengeti’s vast savannas to the bustling metropolises of Lagos and Johannesburg; yet, an adversary in the form of crime threatens the full realization of Africa’s potential. One of the most critical issues confronting the continent is the requirement for a low crime rate.
Fortunately, despite the world’s increasing criminality, several African countries are shining examples of security.
According to the Global Organized Crime Index 2023, on which this list is based, organized crime is still on the rise globally, with 83% of the world’s population living in high-crime zones.
In contrast, the proportion of people who are vulnerable to organized crime has declined significantly: In such conditions, 62% of the world’s population today lives, dropping from 79.4% in 2021.
Regardless, several African countries have managed to stay ahead of the pack, with countries such as Sao Tomé and Principe holding the world’s second lowest crime index. That being stated, the top ten African countries with the lowest crime rates are shown below.
Methodology
“The first component of the Index, criminality, consists of two subcomponents: criminal markets and criminal actors. The former is defined as the political, social, and economic systems surrounding all stages of the illicit trade in and/or exploitation of commodities or people.”
Thus, three essential components form the basis of the Global Organized Crime Index: 15 illicit marketplaces’ size, reach, and influence The makeup and sway of five categories of criminal actors and 12 resilience-building components are used to assess a country’s vulnerability to organized crime as well as its potential to withstand it.
Simply put, the lower the index, the lower the crime rate.
