1. Taormina, Sicily

Sicily combines island and Italian vibes, providing the best of both worlds. Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, sits on the toe of Italy’s boot, straddling the border between Europe and Africa. Appropriately, the out-of-this-world food isn’t the only thing that’s diverse—architecture, art, and ancient ruins await exploration. Post up at Taormina; we recommend any room in the Four Seasons San Domenico Palace, where White Lotus Season 2 was shot.

2. Turks and Caicos

Southeast of the Bahamas in the Atlantic Ocean lies Turks and Caicos, not two islands as might be assumed, but a whopping 40. The coral islands (the most popular of which is Providenciales) are the epitome of a tropical escape, with fewer people than many neighboring island nations to keep the countless stark-white beaches free of crowds.

Book your trip at the uber-private Amanyara, an exclusive luxury resort perched along the coast of an 18,000-acre nature reserve. You’ll be greeted by private infinity pools, ocean-facing villas, a wellness program that could fill at least a week, impeccable service round the clock, and unforgettable meals.

Scandi-chic rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows, contemporary fireplaces, and relaxing soaking baths.

A James Beard-nominated chef prepares an eight-course dinner at the Social Haus, a highlight. 4. Scotland

You don’t have to be fascinated with Outlander or The Crown to think Scotland is an ideal honeymoon destination. Begin in the lowlands, with the vibrant and walkable city of Edinburgh. As far as home bases go, a luxury hotel like The Balmoral, with its Michelin-starred Number One restaurant, is fairly amazing.

Don’t miss the world’s first vertical distillery, a stunning new addition to the Port of Leith. Then head north to Loch Lommond, Scotland’s largest body of water, for a couple of nights at Cameron House. This five-star establishment is an antique family lake home (um, palace?) that serves as an ideal entryway to the Highlands.

Next, visit the Isle of Skye for mystical landscapes and seascapes. Dine at Loch Bay, another Michelin-starred restaurant, walk the Old Man of Storr trail, and spend the night at the posh Kinloch Lodge.

The country also has a popular network of tropical coral islands, including Okinawa, where Hoshinoya Taketomi Island offers a glimpse into traditional Japanese island life, and the new resort Halekulani Okinawa celebrates real culture and nature immersions.

Mexico’s capital city has grown in popularity significantly in recent years, thanks to its thriving gastronomic, nightlife, and art and museum scenes. Italy’s “Divine Coast” lives up to its reputation as one of the world’s most classic and heavenly honeymoon resorts.

An East African safari is unquestionably a bucket list experience—and one of the world’s best honeymoon places. Stay at the five-star Wauwinet and spend your days riding about the 14-mile-long island, feasting on the daily fresh catch, and wandering the cobblestone streets of ancient downtown.

17. Buenos Aires, Argentina

If you go to Argentina for your honeymoon, be prepared to dance the very passionate tango. The capital’s nightlife is well-known, and people travel from all over the world to dance there. The US dollar is stronger than the South African rand, so your bucks will go further in this metropolis near Africa’s southernmost tip. Beautiful hotels and tiny guesthouses—some of the most epic include design-oriented The Silo and the resort-style One&Only Cape Town offer outstanding service and serve as home bases for visiting Cape Town’s stunning peaks and mountains, coastline, and wildlife, including penguins and baboons. The region’s longest hiking trail is also available. After Hurricane Maria devastated the island, eco-resorts are booming, and it’s now a haven for jungle-y adventures (such as canyoning in Titou Gorge), relaxation (check out the mud pools at Wotten Waven Hot Springs), whale watching, and beautiful new hotels like Jungle Bay, Secret Bay, and Cabrits Resort & Spa Kempinski.

27. Grenada

Spice Island, a hidden gem in the Caribbean, was completely unaffected by the hurricanes that ravaged the rest of the region. The timing was right, since there are other luxury resorts in the pipeline, including the first large resort to open on Grand Anse Beach in decades last year. The Silversands Hotel features the Caribbean’s longest pool, but don’t expect to spend all of your time there—the island is full of promise, with stunning beaches to relax on, vibrant culture and cuisine to experience, and rainforests to explore. This Caribbean treasure will only shine brighter with the arrival of the incredible Six Senses La Sagesee, which will open in May 2024.

28. Galapagos

There’s something to be said for the simplicity of a beach resort honeymoon, but if you’re a couple looking for something more, a Galapagos excursion may be the ultimate. Charles Darwin’s favorite resort provides outdoor enthusiasts with the ideal opportunity to immerse themselves in exotic nature.

There are several options for an island experience off the coast of Ecuador, one of which is a cruise, ideally on a small ship or mega-yacht such as Ecoventura’s brand-new luxury-meets-eco-friendly Theory, which sails around the northern or southern islands for a week at a time, with snorkeling, standup paddleboard and kayaking gear, and naturalists on board. There’s also Pikaia Lodge, a premium destination with a sustainable culinary program, coffee grown on-site, an infinity pool, spa, and carbon-neutral hotel rooms.

29. Australia

The discussion between Sydney and Melbourne is similar to that between Los Angeles and New York, but there are many more parts of this enormous island nation to consider. In the former, stay at the QT Bondi to work on your golden tan, or the newer Old Clare Hotel for some urban adventure. After seeing Melbourne’s delicious restaurant scene and mural-filled laneways, head to the artistic Jackalope Hotel for a wine-country experience on the Mornington Peninsula.

Western Australia has a lot to offer, including buzzy Perth for honeymooners, Rottnest Island with beautiful quokkas and Chris Hemsworth-approved glamping at Discovery Rottnest Island, and desert and ocean activities in the Kimberley and Ningaloo Reefs. Of course, there aren’t many beaches more gorgeous than those in the Whitsundays.

30. Guatemala

Some parts of Guatemala resemble Antigua, with cobblestone streets and beautiful buildings, while others are heavy with rainforests and volcanoes. Visit historic Mayan ruins and museums in Guatemala City, which comes alive at night. Escape civilization at Casa Palopó on Lake Atitlan or in casitas on stilts at Francis Ford Coppola’s lakeside La Lancha, where friendly howler monkeys will soothe you to sleep—or wake you up for a lovely day in the rainforest.

31. Iceland

Iceland is for adventurers. Its lengthy list of attractions includes the spectacular Northern Lights in the wintertime (stay at Ion for an impeccable viewpoint), seemingly endless opportunities for trekking, riding the country’s famously tiny but strong horses, exploration of caves, volcanos, ice fields, and glaciers, and steamy hot springs and lagoons—the new Retreat at Blue Lagoon is the place to sleep and play at the most iconic of them all, with a spa built into the volcanic earth and a five-star The kingdom of fire and ice may be frigid, but there’s enough of excitement and romance to keep you warm.

32. Lanai, Hawaii

It is, of course, a part of Hawaii, but the terrain on Lanai is so surreal in places that you will feel as if you have traveled to another planet. Options abound: Ride horses up to the pines, or spend the day driving around the rough roads in a 4×4 Jeep, snorkeling with spinner dolphins, picnicking with fresh poke, swimming in the cerulean sea, and posing among the lunar-like rocks of Garden of the Gods. Aside from the famous poke, the Four Seasons Resort Lanai offers a variety of delicious foods and beverages. And now, the all-inclusive wellness-focused Four Seasons Lanai at Koele, a Sensei Resort, has opened, offering a luxurious new way to relax and rejuvenate mind, body, and soul.

33. Madagascar

This underappreciated African island makes for an unforgettable honeymoon trip. There’s whale viewing, deserted white sand beaches, lemurs, and luxury hotels. The geography is quite diverse, encompassing rainforest, wide savannah, hills, and desert, with many civilizations to discover in between. The ultimate stay is at Miavana by Time + Tide, an ultra-luxe retreat on picture-perfect Nosy Ankao, where you can dive the depths of the Indian Ocean, fly high above it in helicopters, and search for translocated crowned lemurs in the forest, all while sleeping in dreamy digs and dining on five-star cuisine.

34. Maldives

When you hear about the Maldives, you immediately consider going on a honeymoon. The tropical South Asian country is built up of 26 coral atolls in the Indian Ocean, resulting in endless beaches, blue waters for miles, vast reefs, and abundance of fresh fish and seafood. You’ll be quite secluded at any of the exquisite resorts you choose—such as the Four Seasons dream collection and the pioneering, ultra-private Soneva Fushi—so expect a week full of intimate meals, spa treatments, underwater activities, and pure relaxation.

35. Namibia

Namibia has tall sand dunes, a crazily huge desert, and the world’s largest free-roaming black rhino herd. The southern African country isn’t your standard safari destination; it’s much more. New lodges and camps, such as the ultra-luxurious and restful Omaanda, the secluded seaside Shipwreck Lodge, and the original in-the-bush Hoanib Valley Camp, offer experiences you will never forget.

36. Napa Valley, California

For a while, Sonoma’s hype surpassed that of its Northern California neighbor, but Napa is having a moment again, thanks to a flurry of gorgeous boutique boltholes—the tiny, immersive Ink House and majestic Las Alcobas—and even a beer-tasting trail. The most well-known American wine region is full of charm, not to mention game-changing wine and renowned restaurants (anywhere by Thomas Keller), such as those at Calistoga Ranch. Four Seasons Napa Valley and Vista Collina, a resort with its own Food & Wine Center, both just opened, providing couples who like the culinary arts with alternatives beyond their imagination.

Aside from wine, there are numerous spas to relax in, and if you’re feeling adventurous, there are hikes through redwood forests and along lakes. Couples should look into Stanly Ranch, Auberge Resorts Collection, for the latest and greatest in contemporary luxury. Its vast spa complex provides a stunning background for a honeymoon, and its location in the county’s southern reaches makes it an ideal starting point for exploring both Napa and adjacent Sonoma.

37. North Island, New Zealand

Queenstown, New Zealand’s adventure hub, is well-known in the south, but the country’s vast North Island offers equally impressive, if lesser-known, possibilities to see breathtaking vistas and settings. Waiheke Island, near Auckland, is one attractive alternative. Another is Northland, which has rich green scenery and cliffs overlooking the Pacific and Tasmanian Seas. The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs offers 6,000 acres of farmland in the Bay of Islands, with award-winning golf, ancient kauri forests, and private beaches. The Farm at Cape Kidnappers, located farther down the island in Hawke’s Bay, puts you right in the heart of prime wine country, not to mention natural splendor.

38. Oregon

Domestic getaways often feel less thrilling than overseas trips, but there’s so much going on in and around Oregon that this isn’t an issue. Portland, with its numerous parks and bike lanes, gardens, a thriving music and art scene, a large airport, and fashionable microbreweries and restaurants, is an excellent place to begin an Oregon vacation. Start at the elegant The Nines in Portland. For a more upscale stay, visit The Ritz-Carlton, the city’s newest hotel.

The Gorge area boasts the natural beauty of snowy Mount Hood, countless waterfalls and wildflower treks, and the prettiest bed and breakfast, Sakura Ridge. Dine at Hiyu Wine Farm near Mt. Hood for farm-to-table cuisine with Michelin star roots. In wine country, stay at the Tributary Hotel in McMinnville, a luxury boutique hotel with an excellent on-site restaurant. Check out nearby Humble Spirit for another delicious locally produced lunch, Durant for wine and olive oil tasting, and Remy, a cool queer-owned vineyard.

39. Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico has come back stronger than ever. The spirit of Puerto Ricans shines brightly on the island paradise known as the island of magic. Resorts are reopening at a rapid rate, with the birthplace of the piña colada, Caribe Hilton, returning online on an exclusive, green peninsula with views of San Juan’s shore.

After a $60 million renovation, the St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort reopens as the island’s first ultra-luxury resort, surrounded by sea, sand, and foliage with private bird sanctuaries, an on-site marine biologist, an ocean-front Robert Trent Jones Jr. golf course, a variety of activities (think kayaking, windsurfing, fishing, hiking, and SUP), and several dining options.

40. Rajasthan, India

Rajasthan, known for its exuberant celebration of Holi, the ancient Hindu holiday, is a dynamic area to explore at any time. Visit both rural villages and cities, such as Jaipur, the capital, also known as the Pink City, to experience contrasts unlike any other. Go tiger trekking in the desert and explore the stunning buildings. And live like queens and kings at the pink palace hotel Amanbagh, a former Mughal royal retreat. Along with the normal luxury trappings, you may also study the most exotic of sports: camel polo.

41. Sacred Valley, Peru

Nestled in Peru’s Andean mountains, the Sacred Valley is home to beautiful valley settlements such as Urubamba and Aguas Calientes, from whence one may approach Machu Picchu. Understandably, a honeymoon in this one-of-a-kind destination is for people who live to appreciate nature in all of its magnificence. Both Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba and Tambo del Inka are faultless resorts that combine eco-friendly practices with exhilarating activities, cultural traditions, and pure luxury. Make sure not to drink too many pisco sours—alcohol doesn’t improve altitude sickness.

42. Switzerland

Between Zurich’s abundance of chocolate, flowers, and lingerie—not to mention art, Michelin-starred food, and supreme TLC at The Dolder Grand—and the Swiss Alps’ exceptional beauty, world-class skiing, and year-round natural attractions, Switzerland has enough to offer newlyweds. Another popular destination is the UNESCO-protected Lavaux wine region, which overlooks Lake Geneva and features not only amazing wine but also epic climbs, floating restaurants (such as the Le Montreux riverboat), chocolate houses, and Europe’s only overwater hotel. Hotel Palafitte channels Tahiti, but on Lake Neuchatel, with ladders from the cottages leading directly into the water.

43. Singapore

Give credit to Crazy Rich Asians or not, but Singapore’s continuous ascent appears to be linked to everyone’s favorite romance comedy of 2018. Still, what amazes me about the country of incredibly wonderful food is the hospitality boom and the number of amazing new hotels that have recently opened. There’s the JW Marriott Singapore South Beach, designed by Philippe Starck, a Hotel Indigo, a Sofitel on the beachy island of Sentosa, an Andaz near Chinatown, and M Social, also designed by Starck. Four Seasons recently remodeled their accommodations, and new flights promise even simpler access from America.

44. Taha’a, French Polynesia

Bora Bora, in the distance, gets much of the attention, yet Taha’a has its own unique charm. The French Polynesian isle is famous for not just vanilla, a sensual spice that fragrances the air in the most amazing way, but also for rum and black pearls, all of which are appealing possibilities. Le Taha’a Island Resort & Spa, a Relais & Chateaux hotel, is the greatest choice for either a lovely and vast overwater bungalow or a beach perch, and it also has the best access to Coral Garden, the perfect drift snorkeling spot.

45. Slovenia

If you were thinking about Georgia, last year’s hot vacation, consider Slovenia, a Central European country with castles, verdant meadows, snow-capped peaks, thermal springs, and Ljubljana, the continent’s greenest city. It’s a place that isn’t overrun with tourists, so you’ll love exploring it like a pioneer. Slovenia makes its debut in the Michelin Gastronomic Guide, demonstrating its thriving and widespread gourmet culture. Sleep in the Julian Alps at the recently reopened digital detox retreat Sunrose 7, or spend the night near an organic chocolate factory in Chocolate Village’s glamping units.

46. Sri Lanka

Rainforests, beaches, Buddhist relics, wildlife, towns, and citadels—for such a small nation, Sri Lanka provides an astonishing amount of variety for travelers. The exotic island in the midst of the Indian Ocean is rocky yet sophisticated, with cuisine that reflects a melting pot of civilizations. Honeymooners can visit temples, trek, go on safari in national parks, or surf. Settle into the beautiful, LEED-certified solar farm-turned-boutique hotel Ulagalla, or stay at Galle’s newest trendy location, the wellness-focused Tri Lanka.

47. England

If you’re a pair who enjoys strolls in Hyde Park, world-class museums, acclaimed restaurants, and plenty of culture, not to mention the thought of monarchy, London can be just as enticing as Bora Bora is. The opulent resort boasts some of the world’s finest accommodations—think The Connaught or The Savoy—which, of course, sets the tone for romance. The countryside feels like a storybook: Try a sleek, intimate cottage at Soho Farmhouse, a majestic manor room at Heckfield Place in the heart of Jane Austen country, or a room in a 350-year-old castle, Cliveden House, where Meghan Markle spent her final night as a single commoner.

48. Austin, Texas

Are you a bit of a hipster? Do you enjoy music? Is the thought of barbecue making your mouth water? Get yourselves to the trendiest city in the Lone Star State, which, while not known for romance, does have its highlights, such as Mount Bonnell and Lake Travis at sunset. Otherwise, stay at the contemporary bungalow-style Hotel San Jose (or, for a more rural experience, the luxury spa resort Travaasa Austin) and spend your time on South Congress trying out food trucks, seeing shows, and window shopping.

49. Antigua & Barbuda

Antigua and Barbuda are essentially Eden, with pastel facades, busy marketplaces, tropical fruits, limestone formations, and, of course, miles of exquisite beaches. Between the two islands, you can be alone on pristine white beach or on a catamaran floating between the Atlantic and Caribbean Seas at sunset. Visit all-inclusive resorts like the magnificent and recently refurbished Curtain Bluff (which offers tennis, sailing, water-skiing, scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and bocce), as well as once-in-a-lifetime private-island (literally) escapes like Jumby Bay Island.

50. Vietnam

Vietnam has it all—beaches, culture, Buddhist pagodas, rivers, and smart cities. And the food. There are also French colonial remains from Vietnam’s French colonization. Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) and Hanoi are large cities, whereas Hoi An, Mui Ne, and Hue provide more rural charm, art, and lovely sandy coasts. The Six Senses Ninh Van Bay is a quiet beachfront refuge, whereas the Four Seasons Resort The Nam Hai is more accessible. Because Southeast Asia is a huge country, you may want to explore taking road trips to visit the most diverse marketplaces, treks, cuisine, and temples.
