According to the study, a country’s ability to manage economic crises and social fragmentation in their countries has shrunk as a result of concerns with the integrity of elected officials and increased government repression.

According to the findings of the 2023 Index, complete democracies continue to be more robust to organized crime than authoritarian governments.

Good governance procedures that are open, transparent, founded in the rule of law, and foster active citizen involvement lay the groundwork for both state and non-state responses to criminal threats.

Having mentioned that Africa faces a significant number of these perilous challenges. The concerning number of coups in Africa in recent years is due to widespread dissatisfaction with certain of its administrations.

Dissatisfaction is a result of bad living conditions, and as a result, crime is on the rise. While many African countries are relatively crime-free, some are not. The ten African countries with the highest crime rates are shown below.

Methodology

“The first component of the Index, criminality, consists of two subcomponents: criminal markets and criminal actors. The former is defined as the political, social, and economic systems surrounding all stages of the illicit trade in and/or exploitation of commodities or people.”
