This Wednesday is the Villans’ first home Champions League tie of the season, and it is the most keenly awaited of them, as six-time winners Bayern Munich visit Villa Park.

Villa, who drew 2-2 away at Ipswich Town on Sunday, will have one less day to prepare for their midweek encounter with the Bavarian giants, who played on Saturday. The fixture schedule is building up, and there’s been a lot of discussion about whether it’s a realistic expectation for the players, with some teams facing almost 60 encounters in a single season.

When asked about the situation at Portman Road, Emery made his feelings clear, dismissing complaints and underlining that there are no excuses if Villa wish to perform at the highest level.

“What do we want? We want to play in Europe. We want to get the same level like other teams like [Man] City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Man Utd, Newcastle and Tottenham.

“If we don’t want it then we don’t play in Europe and we rest in the week. Fantastic for everybody. It is the challenge we have. The players, myself, the supporters, even the journalists.

“This is our challenge and my demands as well. On Wednesday we are going to be fantastic,” Emery said.
