Craig Pawson has been named the referee for Newcastle United’s trip to Everton this weekend.

Interestingly, the official has overseen 33 top-flight games involving the Magpies, with 11 victories, 11 ties, and 11 loses. Pawson, a Sheffield United fan, also refereed two Championship victories and Sunderland’s FA Cup win in January.

Newcastle has gone unbeaten in the previous nine games with Pawson at the helm. However, the last defeat came at Goodison Park in March 2022, when a protestor forced 14 minutes of extra time. This could be a bad portent.

Toon fans will also remember the season’s first game, when Pawson controversially sent out Fabian Schar for “headbutting” Ben Brereton Diaz. Newcastle won the game 1-0, but they had to play for more than an hour with 10 men.

The Southampton striker, who has the Premier League’s longest winless drought of 19 games, justified his comedic tumble last month. Brereton Diaz told The Daily Mail: “For me, it was adrenaline. In the game, I felt contact and went down, which is simply how it goes.

“That’s part and parcel of it. People have opinions. The only opinions I have to care about are what the team and the manager think.”

Newcastle will travel to Everton on Saturday, with the game scheduled for Sky Sports at 5.30pm. The Magpies are looking for vengeance in their final visit to Goodison Park after last year’s humiliating 3-0 loss.
