Jamie O’Hara has criticised the Premier League for not awarding Dominic Calvert-Lewin a penalty in Everton’s goalless draw with Newcastle United on Saturday.

Dan Burn appeared to bring down the Toffees striker in the Goodison Park penalty area, but after a lengthy VAR review, referee Craig Pawson decided not to call a penalty.

Following the incident, the Premier League’s Match Centre account on X [5 October] provided information on the decision, citing that Calvert-Lewin had “kicked the back of Burn’s leg”.

O’Hara was having none of it, writing via X [5 October]: “That is one of the worst statements I have ever read,” with several laughing emojis.

Premier League slammed after Everton controversy emerges v Newcastle United

Evertonians frequently believe VAR is biassed against the club and even the Premier League, particularly given the points deductions imposed on them throughout the 2023/24 season.

The Premier League’s explanation of the non-penalty judgement has done little to help the Toffees’ reputation.

While many opposing fans will argue that Calvert-Lewin initiated the contact, penalties are issued for the same thing across the country, leaving them to ask why Everton is any different.

There is little arguing with the penalty James Tarkowski gave away in the first 45 minutes after dragging Sandro Tonali to the ground by the scruff of the neck, but fans expect consistency.

O’Hara is rarely one to hold his mouth, and Merseyside fans will be quick to back up his assessment of the controversial decision, which cost the Toffees a chance to win all three points.
