Rangers legend Ally McCoist has responded to Martin O’Neill’s harsh appraisal of the current Ibrox squad, which the former Celtic manager described as the worst in thirty years.
Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Kilmarnock at Rugby Park maintained the Gers’ disappointing start to the season, as they sit six points behind Celtic and Aberdeen at the top of the Scottish Premiership.
In recent comments, O’Neill stated that Philippe Clement’s side is ‘unrecognisable’ from those he faced under Alex McLeish and Dick Advocaat in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Speaking on TalkSPORT’s breakfast show, McCoist declined to go that far, but agreed the situation at Ibrox is quite troubling. In reaction to O’Neill’s statements, the 62-year-old stated: “Well, that [this being the worst Rangers team in 30 years] is debatable because the fact of the matter is they were relegated to the Third Division.” Everything else he says is 100% correct.
“It’s agony to hear but he’s right what he says.
“There is a massive gulf between the teams at this moment in time. He’s also right that Rangers are capable of going there – or anywhere – and getting a result. But to do it consistently on a regular basis? Nah, miles off it.
“And I don’t think there’s going to be an immediate quick fix, sadly. That’s the problem. Martin, who generally and nearly always speaks an awful lot of sense, is probably spot on then, sadly.”
