Newcastle United icon Alan Shearer makes Manchester United point as England confirms Thomas Tuchel’s appointment
Thomas Tuchel is poised to be announced the new England manager on Wednesday.
Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has claimed that the Football Association acted quickly to select Thomas Tuchel due to concerns that he might be scooped up by Manchester United. The German, who previously led Chelsea and Bayern Munich, is due to be announced as England’s new manager today.
The FA said on Tuesday that it is in early talks with Tuchel, who will become the third foreign manager after Fabio Capello and Sven-Goran Eriksson. Tuchel had been strongly connected with a transfer to United since leaving Bayern Munich at the end of the previous season, assuming they parted ways with Erik ten Hag.
Pep Guardiola was also regarded as a potential successor to Gareth Southgate. However, former United striker Shearer stated on The Rest is Football podcast: “If they sounded out Pep, fine, he’s the best manager in the world.”
He added: “You then have to look at what’s available to you. They’ve looked at Thomas Tuchel and have thought there is a chance he could get the Manchester United job pretty soon.”
Shearer emphasised the urgency of the situation: “So opportunity lies now. If they didn’t act quick now they weren’t going to get one of the outstanding candidates for the job.”
While Tuchel’s nationality may not please all supporters, Shearer sees no issue, stating: “If he’s the outstanding candidate, yeah.”
