Arsenal were dealt another crushing blow in the title chase with a 1-0 defeat at Newcastle on Saturday afternoon, leaving them seven points behind league leaders Liverpool.

The Gunners were blunted by the Magpies, who failed to produce many significant chances on Tyneside, with Declan Rice missing a great chance in the dying moments.

Alexander Isak, who has been connected with Arsenal, scored the game’s only goal, powering a header home to hand Arsenal their second defeat of the season.

Arteta admits Newcastle loss was deserved

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is known for going out fighting after his team loses, but he could only lift his hands up and accept his squad was thoroughly thrashed on Saturday.

The Gunners had only one shot on goal in a troubling performance overall, and Arteta could not find any excuses, stating that he was upset with how his team responded to going 1-0 down.

“We deserved to lose today,” he said after the game. “I thought we started really well and were really dominant. We didn’t defend the box well enough. Credit to them. They scored a great goal with a good ball. Then the game changes and you start to play a different game.

“You have to adapt and we didn’t do that well enough. I am very frustrated. We got dragged into a game they are looking for constantly and we couldn’t play the game that we wanted. We had two big chances – Mikel had a big one, Declan had a big one. We lacked answers.”

Arsenal continue worrying defensive form

Arsenal’s defeat against Newcastle means they have now gone three Premier League games without a victory, following a 2-2 draw with Liverpool and a 2-0 loss to Bournemouth.

The team has also had a troubling run, failing to keep a clean sheet in their last six league games. The last clean slate dates back to September 15, when they defeated Spurs 1-0.

Isak’s goal against Arsenal was the 11th they’ve conceded this season in the Premier League. That is the same number as Manchester United in 14th and Crystal Palace in 17th.

The Gunners were undoubtedly hampered by the absence of suspended William Saliba, with Thomas Partey filling in at right-back during his and Ben White’s absences in the final two games.
