Kieran Trippier goes public and reacts to the infamous Newcastle United captaincy rejection
Kieran Trippier has stated that his gesture to Bruno Guimaraes on Saturday was a “non-story” after Newcastle United fans were perplexed.
Fans observed the 34-year-old rejecting the armband halfway through the second half against Leicester City. With Newcastle’s captain, Bruno Guimaraes, fortunately avoiding a red card, Eddie Howe pulled him despite Newcastle’s overwhelming three-goal advantage.
Trippier was substituted three times as he works his way back to full fitness after a hamstring injury. Guimaraes, who had captained the Magpies for much of his tenure at St James’ Park, went to hand over the armband to the veteran right-back.
Trippier, on the other hand, cited Dan Burn, a regular in the Newcastle team this season and a crucial member of the club’s leadership group. This sparked a debate on social media regarding why Trippier turned down the captaincy post.
Speculation about his future has persisted since January, when the Magpies turned down two proposals from Bayern Munich. Further offers in the summer were reportedly turned down, with Howe determined to keep Trippier in Tyneside.
“The situation is business as usual,” he said amid rumoured Everton interest. “Tripps has trained really well this week. I’m surprised by a lot of the stories that have come out.
“(He’s) a valuable member of the squad. His professionalism has been first-class. I’m not really sure where this has come from. His leadership skills, his ability with the ball, his assist record, everything he brings to the group we definitely want here.”
