I had no regrets about leaving a small club like Everton; now I could receive a big-money move to Liverpool
Antonee Robinson has emerged as one of the top left-backs in the Premier League years after leaving Everton, and according to speculations, the 27-year-old might be returning to Merseyside.
USA hero Antonee Robinson is allegedly a key target for Liverpool, years after the Fulham defender declared he had no regrets about leaving bitter rivals Everton.
The United States international has established himself as one of the top full-backs in the Premier League, but he previously had a rough stint at Everton. He joined the club as an 11-year-old in 2008 and stayed until 2019, but did not make a senior appearance before leaving.
Serious injuries, as well as the fact that Leighton Baines and Lucas Digne were ahead of him in the pecking order, led him to leave the club for Wigan Athletic after a successful loan spell in 2018/19.
After only one season with the Latics, Robinson left for Fulham following their relegation to League One due to a 12-point penalty for entering administration. The 27-year-old, who was close to signing AC Milan before joining Fulham, talked to the ECHO after Wigan were relegated to England’s third division and disclosed the circumstances around his Goodison left, stating he had no regrets.
“Not one regret, no,” Robinson stated. “Everton were always really honest with me, they just said, ‘We’ve got rid of a few players but we definitely need to keep Bainesy. We can’t get rid of Jags, the captain, and lose Baines as well.
“‘It’s getting rid of so much of Everton in the changing room and he’s such a good player as well still. We’ve got him and Digne starts for us so you have to wait for two injuries to start so you’re not even making the bench at the minute so we think it’s best for you if you just leave. It’s nothing to do with you, it’s just you need to play.’
“I am really thankful they were that upfront and honest with me because it gave me the chance to go away and progress elsewhere.”
