Moussa Sissoko, a former Newcastle United player, had the final laugh this weekend after meeting the Magpies’ hated rivals Sunderland.

The 35-year-old, who made 133 appearances at St. James’ Park over four years, joined Championship side Watford in the summer transfer window. It is his second tenure with the Hornets, having previously spent one season in the Premier League with them in 2021-22.

Sissoko spent time with Tottenham Hotspur and Nantes after leaving Newcastle, before returning to Vicarage Road earlier this summer. Since rejoining Tom Cleverley’s Championship side, the Frenchman has made six appearances.

His most recent outing was in this weekend’s 2-1 victory over the Black Cats. The travelling red and white army greeted the former Magpies midfielder coldly.

Sunderland fans remembered his tenure at Newcastle and booed the former French international throughout the match. However, the former Magpie had the final laugh as the Hornets converted a late penalty to secure all three points against Regis Le Bris’ side.

Sissoko celebrated his victory in front of the touring Red and White Army, with social media footage showing him ‘giving it large.’

However, Newcastle fans were quick to remind out that the French midfielder did not always perform well at St. James’ Park, noting his form during the Magpies’ relegation season in 2015-16. Sissoko was sold to Tottenham at the end of the season for around £30 million.
