Hwang Ui-jo was on the books at both Nottingham Forest and Norwich City, making 18 appearances for the latter last season before joining Turkiye Turkish Super Lig side Alanyaspor.

The South Korean forward has also played for Olympiakos, which is owned by Evangelos Marinakis from Forest, and Girondins Bordeaux in France.

However, according to French source L’Equipe, Hwang now faces four years in prison after it was uncovered that he had filmed sexual sessions with two of his companions.

According to authorities in Seoul, Hwang filmed interactions four times between June and September 2022.

The case against the forward arose after his sister-in-law shared the video on social media.

Hwang subsequently sought to erase the films and sued his sister-in-law for blackmail, which was successful and resulted in a three-year term.

Nonetheless, the lawsuit against Hwang continued since he had taped the tapes unlawfully and without consent.

On Wednesday, he made his first court appearance in the South Korean capital, sorry for the ‘disappointment’ caused by his acts.

‘I will not do anything wrong in the future and will do my best as a footballer,’ he told the court.

‘I sincerely apologise to the victims who have been affected by my actions, and I am deeply sorry for the disappointment I have caused to all those who have cared and supported me.’

The prosecution in the case has reportedly sought a four-year sentence for the player, and appears to be unconvinced by the sincerity of Hwang’s remorse.

‘Hwang may have admitted to the charges now, but his previous denials cast doubt on whether he is truly remorseful,’ the prosecution said.

‘One of the victims refused to plea bargain and asked for a severe sentence.’

Given the illegal nature of the tapes’ recording, no information was provided about the ladies who featured in them without consent.

The forward has made 62 appearances for his country and scored 19 goals, including a win in the Asian Games in 2019.
