Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw takes a hilarious dig at the Astros for Cheating

Clayton Kershaw surely didn’t wake up intending to criticize the 2017 Houston Astros this week. However, when asked who the best 1-2 hitting tandem was, he expressed an amusing thought.

Los Angeles Dodgers pitchers Clayton Kershaw confirms his plans for the future after season ending injury

“I’m trying to think of teams that I pitched against,” Kershaw told Jayson Stark of The Athletic. “Like the best teams. I mean, leadoff-wise, (Jose) Altuve and (Alex) Bregman were good (in Houston). But they cheated, so that’s not really the same.”

Needless to say, Jose Altuve and Alex Bregman are not as talented as Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts.

The Astros embarrassed Kershaw, arguably the best pitcher of his generation, in Game 5 of the 2017 World Series. Houston scored six runs in the fifth inning to chase the veteran southpaw from the mound.

The Astros went on to win Game 5 13-12 at Minute Maid Park. The Astros would spoil history by winning the Fall Classic in seven games.

Following an investigation by the commissioner’s office, it was discovered that Houston employed a trash-can plan to seal their October fate. It was a nightmare for Kershaw, and it’s clear he’s not forgotten what could have been.

Kershaw was likely the most valuable player in the 2017 World Series, but his performance in Game 5 cost him the title. According to Evan Gattis, the team knew the pitches Kershaw would throw in Game 5 at Minute Maid Park.

The Houston lineup did not swing and miss on a single breaking ball from Kershaw. In 2019, MLB determined that the Astros had electronically stolen signs throughout the 2017 season, but the harm had already been done to Kershaw and the Dodgers’ reputations.

To make matters worse, no players from the 2017 Houston Astros were ever punished, and the team retained its championship trophy.

Fast forward to 2024, and the Dodgers are one game away from the World Series. It’s so close, fans can almost taste it.

The Dodgers play their final game at Citi Field on Friday, with Jack Flaherty taking the mound. The Los Angeles Dodgers have the opportunity to wrap up the NLCS in New York on Friday night.

Although Kershaw will not pitch for the Dodgers during the 2024 postseason, the veteran left-hander will undoubtedly win a World Series ring if Los Angeles wins the championship.

He has also announced that he will return in 2025.
