Chargers star fined heavily after hitting Steelers’ Justin Fields in the head
Khalil Mack, an edge rusher for the Los Angeles Chargers, was fined a large amount for roughing the passer against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
On the play, Mack is engaged with Steelers right tackle Broderick Jones when he approaches Fields and swats him in the head, receiving the penalty. Mack was fined $16,883 for his offence.
The play was called roughing the passer on the pitch, which most likely increased the fine amount. Mack was one of three players punished, along with Chargers star safety Derwin James, who received a one-game suspension for hitting Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth in the head.
Steelers tight end Darnell Washington was fined $6760 for an illegal blindside block on Mack late in a run play. All three fines will be directed to an organization that assists former NFL players.
It is not surprising to see some of the punishments imposed in a tough match. Washington’s fine is the first the NFL has issued to the Steelers this season, after they were the second-most punished team in 2023.
