Mastercard Foundation AfOx Scholarships For Young Africans

The University of Oxford and the Mastercard Foundation have an innovative and ambitious collaboration through the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program and Africa Oxford Initiative.

The cooperation will fund 400 young African scholars’ taught Masters degrees in pandemic preparedness and recovery at Oxford.

The Mastercard Foundation AfOx Scholarship helps passionate, locally rooted, and internationally minded African youth study at Oxford.

Mastercard Foundation and AfOx ideals of collegiality, empathy, commitment, inclusivity, and community underpin the Scholarship program.

The Scholarship is part of the AfOx Graduate Scholars Program, which helps African students succeed in Oxford and beyond.

The Scholarship funds a rigorous one-year taught Master’s course at Oxford to teach Scholars technical, entrepreneurial, and leadership skills and connect them to world-class resources in their fields.

The scholarship scheme emphasizes life skills outside academia, supports a lifelong alumni network, and prepares students for study.

Scholarship Requirements:

To be considered for this scholarship,

  • Submit your application to the University of Oxford via the graduate admissions portal by the deadline for your chosen course of study and indicate that you wish to apply for AfOx funding.
  • Please read the Application Guide in detail ahead of making the application. We strongly recommend you submit your application form and all of your supporting documents at least a week before the earliest deadline for your course.

Scholarship Duration and Reward

International Master’s students can receive a full scholarship for tuition and living expenses. The scholarship covers an economy return trip, visa and Immigration Health Surcharge fees, settling down stipend, and an emergency Thrive Fund.

In the first year, a demanding Oxford Master’s course and a Leadership and Impact Programme help academics develop collaborative leadership skills to solve difficult social and environmental issues across sectors and disciplines.

Scholars will have 4-6 month Ubuntu Period of Service internships with top African organizations after completing their Master’s Program. The scholars will work on African initiatives and receive mentoring from top African academics and practitioners to establish significant careers in Africa.

Scholars get a customized Leadership and Impact Program from the Skoll Centre for Social Enterprise and academic and social assistance. Scholarship holders will join the AfOx Alumni Network to continue contributing to the Oxford University African Scholars community.

Method of Application

The Mastercard Foundation AfOx Scholarship enables students from all African countries to pursue graduate studies at the University of Oxford. All students with an African nationality and residence who receive a conditional offer from the University will be eligible for the scholarship.

The scholarship emphasizes explicitly groups who have historically been under-represented, including but not limited to female scholars, people from refugee and displaced backgrounds and disabled scholars. Necessary residence considerations will be made for students from refugee and displaced backgrounds.

(a) To be considered for this scholarship, submit your application to the University of Oxford via the graduate admissions portal by the deadline for your chosen course of study and indicate that you wish to apply for AfOx funding. Please read the Application Guide in detail ahead of making the application. We strongly recommend you submit your application form and all of your supporting documents at least a week before the earliest deadline for your course.

(b) The Oxford University Masters application fee of £75 is waived upon request for many low-income countries – refer to the application fee waiver section. Prospective applicants can apply to the Afrisoc Mentoring program for support with Oxford Applications and potential fee waivers for countries not eligible for the fee waiver. If you have any concerns about the application fee, please email afox@ndm.ox.ac.uk before you submit your application through the Applicant Portal.

(c) Eligible candidates who receive a conditional offer from their course will be then invited to apply for the AfOx Graduate Scholarship Program. All invited candidates will be expected to fill in the AfOx Graduate Scholarship questionnaire during the application process.

(d) Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed virtually before decisions are made, and the timelines will be communicated at the interview stage.
