Before the coronavirus epidemic, AI, machine learning, data analytics, and cloud computing had grown fast for decades. In just seven months, they have become important in today’s society amid the worldwide health crisis.

The driving force behind these technological adaptations has increased demand dramatically for employment and people with the skills and knowledge to suit the needs of digitally transformed businesses and sectors.

Since 2015, the demand for AI capabilities has more than doubled, with Indeed reporting 119 percent more job ads in 2018.

The University of the Witwatersrand’s School of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics’ undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs help students develop the skills, knowledge, and personality needed to succeed in this new technology era.

Recently appointed Vice-Chancellor Designate Zeblon Vilakazi wants to turn Wits University into an innovation hub and provide world-changing innovations like MIT in the US.

He stated, “We need to continue to develop the originators, innovators and critical thinkers who can help us solve the problems of the 21st century”

1. Robotics engineer

Robotics engineers must constantly analyze, reevaluate, configure, test, and maintain prototypes, robotic components, integrated softwares, and machines for the manufacturing, mining, and automotive service industries as technology evolves rapidly. Technical work takes patience and logic.

They tested and optimized numerous programs used by scientists and researchers to analyze real-time COVID-19 data and global warming. Judges gave students two more advanced coding assignments to test their ability to adapt to artificial intelligence’s fast-changing reality. Wits University placed second.
