These Are The Vital Items Your Emergency Kit Needs During An Earthquake

When the next earthquake or natural disaster strikes, being prepared can make all the difference. Having a well-stocked emergency kit can help you and your family stay safe and self-sufficient.

“It’s crucial to have emergency supplies ready,” says Jeff Edelstein, owner of SOS Survival Products. “You need to be in a position where you can take care of yourself and your loved ones for at least three days—ideally a week or more, even up to a month.”

According to Edelstein, the foundation of every emergency kit should be water and non-perishable food. He also emphasizes the importance of a quality first aid kit and having any necessary prescription medications on hand.

“If you ever need to evacuate and leave your medication behind, it can quickly become a serious issue,” he warns.

One often overlooked item? Toilet paper. Edelstein points out that the COVID-19 pandemic reminded us just how essential that can be.

Other critical items to include—especially if they are battery-powered—are:

  • Gloves

  • A flashlight or lantern

  • A battery-powered radio for emergency updates

  • Chargers and cables for various mobile devices

  • Cash in small bills

“If the power goes out, stores won’t be able to process credit cards. Cash becomes extremely valuable,” Edelstein explains.

Lastly, make it a habit to check your emergency kit once a year. Replace expired items and ensure everything is still in working order.

“Whether it’s an earthquake, fire, flood, hurricane, or power outage, having emergency supplies set aside is just smart planning,” Edelstein says.
