Newcastle United are apparently looking to bring back a player they let go 11 years ago

It occurs at every club, but Newcastle United appear to be particularly fond of hindsight. Releasing players from the young program only to later look back and lament the decision.

Bournemouth match-winner Marcus Tavernier suffers another hamstring injury

Indeed, the Magpies had to break a world record to sign Alan Shearer after letting him slide through the net as a youngster, but that won’t be necessary if the current whispers about a hindsight deal are to be confirmed.

Newcastle and Bournemouth are intimately linked these days thanks to Eddie Howe, and whenever the media associates the Magpies with a Bournemouth player, it nearly causes an automatic eye roll.

Antoine Semenyo is possibly the most high-profile instance right now, with Newcastle desperate to find a solution to their right-wing problem.

Newcastle are looking at Marcus Tavernier after releasing him at 14

According to The Boot Room, Newcastle is looking into more than only Semenyo, with Marcus Tavernier also under consideration.

Marcus, like his older brother James, was part of Newcastle’s development setup and went on to have a successful career north of the border.

Marcus was released by Newcastle at the age of 14, and he moved on to Middlesbrough before joining Bournemouth in 2022.

Tavernier, at 25 years old, is off to a good start this season with Bournemouth, having scored two goals and assisted once in 12 games.

The versatile midfielder is most comfortable on the left but can also play on the right and might be a low-cost alternative for Newcastle.

However, we don’t think this one will go anywhere. If Eddie Howe is going to raid his old club, he is more likely to go after Semenyo than Tavernier.
