LSU fans’ decision to throw debris on the field during the Alabama football game will cost the Tigers.
The SEC stated Monday that LSU would be penalized $250,000 for “interrupting its game against Alabama when fans threw debris onto the field.”
Unlike field rushes, in which schools pay the opposing team, the cash will be directed to the SEC’s post-graduate scholarship program.
In the second half, LSU fans tossed trash onto the field in response to a facemask call on third down, which extended an Alabama drive. Some supporters booed, and others tossed rubbish.
“Fans, please do not throw debris onto the field,” the Tiger Stadium public address announcer said as items flew toward the grass. “Do not throw debris onto the field.”
Fans at Tiger Stadium did it again when a pass to receiver Kyren Lacy was ruled incomplete after review. Alabama won the game 42-13.
LSU will now have to discover the persons who threw the trash onto the field using all available video and ban them from all LSU sporting events for the rest of the school year, under conference policy. LSU must also study and enhance game management processes to avoid similar incidents in the future, and furnish the SEC with a report detailing those efforts.
“The Conference is not suspending alcohol sales privileges for Louisiana State University at this time but reserves the right to do so if other requirements outlined above are not met,” the SEC’s announcement read.
