Former NFL general manager gives strange, outrageous Detroit Lions trade proposal
The NFL trade deadline cannot arrive fast enough…
Next Tuesday, after 4 p.m. ET, all of the news, rumors, and speculation regarding the 2024 NFL Trade Deadline will end. What the Detroit Lions do, if anything, is uncertain, though it appears that they should surely get an edge rusher.
It is reasonable to anticipate that cost, both directly in a trade and residual contract cost, will be the key motivators for the Lions’ interest in trading for any player. Overall, “fit” in terms of scheme and culture is equally crucial.
All of this necessarily reduces the number of feasible trade targets the Lions may pursue. There’s also a chance they won’t trade for an edge rusher at all.
Former NFL general manager Mike Tannenbaum went off the rails on Friday’s edition of ESPN’s “Get Up” with a trade proposal based on the idea of “Who Says No?”
“The Detroit Lions are gonna acquire Myles Garrett for three first-round picks, Jahmyr Gibbs and a second-round pick….and the Detroit Lions are gonna win the Super Bowl…
Tanenbaum received the expected response from his other panelists. Ryan Clark stood up from his chair, Bart Scott examined the former GM’s coffee cup for evidence of anything he shouldn’t be consuming in the morning, and Dan Graziano proposed several Detroit landmarks as part of the plan.
Then Tanenbaum went too far.
“Jahmyr Gibbs is a good player, but he’s replaceable.”
Scott (after returning to the table) and Clark rebuffed Tanenbaum’s idea with logic, citing Za’Darius Smith as a more feasible trade target than Myles Garrett and Gibbs as a crucial piece of the Lions’ offense that should not be traded under any circumstances.

When you make a stupid trade request, as Tanenbaum did, people will discover receipts for your work in the draft as Jets general manager.
It’s not even that the concept of the Lions trading for Garrett is absurd. It’s extremely unlikely, if not completely out of the question, but the Browns may consider an aggressive offer. If the Lions are or were interested in Garrett, two first-round picks could be a reasonable option.
However, Tannenbaum abandoned any semblance of rationality in matching the reigning Defensive Player of the Year with the Lions by trading three first-round picks for Gibbs in his insane proposition.
