The head football coach is in charge of everything. Kalen DeBoer ‘accused three players of betrayal’ following the dismal loss to Tennessee

Former Alabama coaches Paul Bryant and Nick Saban have something to say about play calling.

Kalen DeBoer salary: How much is Alabama football coach salary?
Remember Lane Kiffin, the offensive coordinator at Alabama, throwing up his arms in “touchdown” celebration when the play was still developing? It’s no surprise that he’s remained the head coach at Ole Miss while still calling the plays. Have you seen the clipboard soar into the air?

A head football coach is responsible for every facet of his squad, regardless of whether he takes on the role of play-caller, as Kiffin has.

Don’t blame the Alabama Crimson Tide Defense for the loss

There is a lot of responsibility to be shared in Alabama’s loss to Tennessee. But don’t point fingers at Alabama’s defense.

There is a lot of responsibility to be shared in Alabama’s loss to Tennessee. First, finger-pointing should be directed at the Alabama Football offensive staff, notably Kalen DeBoer. The next fair aim is Jalen Milroe’s regression. That too casts a poor light on DeBoer and Nick Sheridan. The Alabama offensive line is not blameless, but offensive line issues are not exclusively the fault of the players, as Milroe’s failure was.

Alabama’s Crimson Tide defense fell short of defeating the Vols. However, Crimson Tide defenders do not deserve to be blamed for two reasons. The primary reason is the Tide offense. James Burnip had to punt to Tennessee seven times. Alabama went 3 for 14 on offensive third-down conversions.

The Crimson Tide defense caused three Tennessee turnovers, including two interceptions and a fumble recovery following a forced fumble. Following Malahi Moore’s forced fumble, which was recovered by Jihaad Campbell, the Crimson Tide converted two first downs before punting. After interceptions by Malachi and Jaylen Mbakwe, Alabama’s offense went three and out. Following Malachi’s interception return, Alabama had a first down at the Tennessee 36-yard line. That possession ended with Alabama punting on 4th-and-33, from its own 41-yard line.

The Alabama football defense failed to slow Tennessee running back Dylan Sampson. Sampson totaled 136 yards and averaged 5.3 yards per rushing attempt. The Vols finished with 408 total yards, including 214 on the ground. Keon Sabb was out for much of the second half as Alabama’s secondary suffered from injuries. Sabb was not 100 percent at first. Sabb, DeVonta Smith, and Red Morgan were all out of the game when Tennessee’s offense was at its peak.

What can be stated is that the Alabama Crimson Tide, now 5-2, is at a crossroads. Technically, finishing the regular season 10-2 would put Alabama in playoff contention. However, this club does not appear to be capable of finishing the regular season with five wins, let alone four. Hopefully, Saturday in Knoxville marked the bottom.
