Sean Dyche admits it was a “tough call” to leave Jarrad Branthwaite out of Everton’s starting lineup against Ipswich Town.

Sean Dyche's stance on Jarrad Branthwaite raises questions

The Toffees returned to winning ways following the international break with a 2-0 win at Portman Road on Saturday (19 October), thanks to goals from Iliman Ndiaye and Michael Keane.

Brathwaite was not in the Blues’ matchday squad, and while Dyche had announced his ailment prior to the game, the Toffees manager has suggested the defender may be allowed more time to recover his fitness.

As stated by Liverpool World on Sunday (20 October), he said: “Jarrad was a difficult call, to be truthful, but the previous time we put him in [against Crystal Palace], I wasn’t sure about it, I thought it was maybe too early.

“He did great, and then he got injured again so I thought we needed to give him a period when he’s properly fit.”

What has happened to Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite at Goodison Park?

Everton are undoubtedly a superior team when Branthwaite is fit and available, but Dyche would be hesitant to reintroduce his best centre-back if it means risking him picking up a fresh injury.

As the Blues manager mentioned, the 22-year-old impressed against Crystal Palace before the international break. Since that game, he has remained out, with no return date set.

Fortunately, Michael Keane appears to have regained his form during the England international’s absence. While the former Burnley player is far from faultless, his finish against the Tractor Boys on Saturday was outstanding and consistent with a striker’s abilities.

Hopefully, Branthwaite will be back in the fold soon. It makes sense that Dyche doesn’t want to rush him back, which is much simpler to do when the team is winning.

However, if Dyche is under pressure again at Goodison Park, the England international might return to the squad.
