Thomas Tuchel took over as England manager after Gareth Southgate resigned in the summer, and a fresh report claims this might have a direct impact on Newcastle United’s January transfer intentions.

Eddie Howe had long been connected with the England job before Thomas Tuchel was selected, and while it was a relief for Newcastle to put an end to the speculation, it is now being claimed that the Magpies may benefit from the appointment in other ways.

As far as putting two and two together and getting anything other than four, this assertion ranks right up there with some of the most bizarre answers, but we’ll look into it nonetheless.

The one saga that stretched on almost as long as the Eddie Howe for England rumours this year was of course Newcastle’s pursuit of Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi.

Will Newcastle go in for Marc Guehi again in January?

Marc Guehi was Newcastle’s top transfer target after missing out on Palace teammate Michael Olise, with the story lasting until deadline day before breaking apart.

It is now unclear whether Newcastle will make another attempt to sign Guehi in January. As Guehi’s contract expires, Newcastle is expected to make proposals far lower than the £70 million they offered in the summer.

Give Me Sport has also suggested that Thomas Tuchel’s appointment as England manager is ‘excellent news’ for Newcastle because it cements Howe’s place at the club and implies he will influence Paul Mitchell in the transfer market.

Eddie Howe and Paul Mitchell were already working on January targets

Eddie Howe was never likely to go, and he and Mitchell are already collaborating on projects. Tuchel’s appointment will not have influenced them in any way.

In terms of Marc Guehi, it remains to be seen whether Newcastle will make another move for him.

After following him for so long in the summer, they’re expected to make an approach, but we doubt we’ll be sticking around if negotiations resume like they did before. Paul Mitchell is ensuring that he has additional targets to approach, and they will be addressed with Eddie Howe as well, so he is unlikely to pair Howe with a player he does not want.
