Manchester United are apparently contemplating Eddie Howe to replace Erik ten Hag.

The Newcastle United manager’s future has been a source of discussion in recent months. However, England’s delay in announcing Gareth Southgate’s replacement has contributed to this.

Many speculated that Howe’s unclear replies in the summer, along with a disappointing transfer window, would lead him to accept the vacant head coaching position. However, the Toon manager has subsequently committed his future to St James’ Park, claiming he is “happy” on Tyneside.

Interim manager Lee Carsley appeared to be on track to become England’s full-time manager, but a stunning defeat to Greece and comments distancing him from the position have sparked fresh speculation. Howe, who was the highest-placed Englishman in the Premier League for two seasons, is still a popular option among journalists.

According to GiveMeSport, if Newcastle fires Ten Hag, Manchester United may raid the club. The Dutchman is under pressure only months after signing a contract extension at Old Trafford.

Dan Ashworth, a former Toon sporting director, left to join the Red Devils and is well acquainted with Howe. Given the painful tone of his own departure, raiding Newcastle for their manager would be a contentious decision.

If Ten Hag is fired, Ashworth will play an important part in determining who would be the next manager of Manchester United. And current Newcastle manager Howe has already received clearance from senior Old Trafford authorities.

When asked to select prospective young coaches, legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson famously referred to Howe as a “good manager”. Toon officials are confident in retaining the 46-year-old on Tyneside.

The Telegraph claimed last week that Howe is happy at St James’ Park. Should Manchester United come calling, Newcastle is shielded by a compensation clause worth around £6million.
