Gary Neville has criticised James Tarkowski for conceding the penalty in the Everton at Newcastle match on October 5.

He typifies everything': James Tarkowski says £20m Everton player is absolutely perfect

The Magpies missed the subsequent penalty kick, saving the Toffees’ blushes as the game finished 0-0 at Goodison Park.

However, the former Manchester United captain believes Tarkowski’s stupidity and violence prompted the referee to point to the spot.

He told The Overlap US on 9 October at 12:44 p.m.: “There was a decision later in the day during the Everton vs Newcastle game where Tonali was pulled down by Tarkowski and he would not have gotten the ball.

“There’s no way that swung ball in would have got to him. But I did think that was a penalty, even though it didn’t impact the play. Just because of the pure stupidity and the aggression of the hold.”

James Tarkowski let his teammates down and almost cost Everton the game

Tarkowski, known for his toughness, overstepped by engaging in an unwarranted and violent hold on Tonali, which, as Neville pointed out, would not have had a substantial impact on the play’s outcome.

This lapse in discipline not only increased the possibility of committing a penalty, but also demonstrated a lack of awareness and in-game control required of someone of his ability.

In high-stakes games, experienced players are required to keep their cool and make smart decisions, especially when the ball is unlikely to reach the opponent.

His experience should dictate a more measured approach, with an emphasis on good defence rather than physicality, which is easily fined.

He was one of the Toffees’ finest players last season, but he may be one of their worst this year.

Hopefully, Sean Dyche will explain these things to him and guarantee that he returns from the international break reenergised.
