Alan Shearer criticised Newcastle United’s lack of quality in the final third against Everton.

Eddie Howe’s squad drew 0-0 in their final visit to Goodison Park. Anthony Gordon’s first-half penalty was saved by Jordan Pickford, and he and his teammates wasted several further opportunities to break the deadlock.

The Magpies were missing strikers Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson, and Shearer feels this might lead to a victory.

“They were awful in the final third today,” Shearer told Match of the Day. “They played some really good football in terms of getting into the final third but there final pass or finish was awful.

“Their attacking numbers are very mid-tableish but having said that, they are sixth in the league. They’ve had no [Callum] Wilson or [Alexander] Isak in the last couple of games. They need Isak fit if they’re going to improve those stats.”

Gordon’s penalty was granted after James Tarkowski brought Sandro Tonali to the ground. Play was initially waved on, but VAR intervened and dispatched referee Craig Pawson to the pitchside monitor.

In the second half, the Toffees’ penalty request was knocked down after Dominic Calvert-Lewin collided with Dan Burn.

VAR sided with Pawson’s on-field decision, perplexing manager Sean Dyche.

“I think it’s a bizarre one,” Dyche said. “Their penalty, it’s a bit of to-ing and fro-ing but you can’t do that.

“Ours, the thing I can’t work out, I see so many weak penalties and then you see that. He’s clearly tried to swipe the ball at goal. Their lad, I don’t think he can even reach it and interrupts him striking at goal – let’s say he’s going to score.

“They don’t even look at it. At least have a look at it. Our record is awful for penalties, you know we don’t get them. If that’s in middle of pitch, everyone thinks in the stadium thinks it’s a foul so why isn’t it? Whenever we ask the question, we go to powers that be and they’ll give some technical reason.

“It’s like when you tap someone on the shoulder and their legs buckle. We can’t get penalties so who knows?”

Shearer, however, believes the right decision was reached.

“I only thing I would say on that one is Dan Burn doesn’t attempt to tackle or get in his [Calvert-Lewin’s] way,” Shearer added. “Calvert-Lewin then kicks the back of him but it’s one of those that if it’s given it’s not going to be overturned.

“He didn’t give it so they’re not going to go the other way. I didn’t think it was a penalty, no.”
