Newcastle flop who could not play for Eddie Howe’s Magpies is now chasing titles after unexpected swap
The Newcastle defender is in the final 12 months of his contract and departed the club on loan this summer.
Jamal Lewis, a Newcastle United defender, is aiming a title in Brazil after signing a season-long loan deal with Sau Paulo during the summer transfer window.
The left-back, who joined the Magpies from Norwich City in 2020 as a highly regarded youth, failed to live up to his potential, making only 36 games in black and white. Lewis spent the season on loan at Championship side Watford, making 38 appearances in all competitions, but has battled to break into Eddie Howe’s starting lineup.
A loan move to Brazil effectively ends his Magpies career, as his contract is slated to expire in the summer of 2025. Lewis is aiming for titles in Brazil with Tricolour after making his debut as a second-half substitute in Sunday’s 1-0 away win over Cruzeiro in the Brasileirão.
“Even though it was an away game, it was great to see the fans, they made a lot of noise and supported the players, I am grateful to them,” said the Northern Ireland international, speaking to Vivir en Parla. “I have seen games at home, I hope to be able to receive all this affection and show this atmosphere, it will be incredible to be able to play at home.
“Sao Paulo is a huge club in Brazil and Brazilian football is very well regarded in Europe, especially in England. I am just arriving, but we want to win, win the trophy, add another ‘World Cup’ to our list.
“I have played my entire career in England and I have always said that I would like to play in a league in another country, to learn another culture, another type of game.
“The career is short, it is a great opportunity to be in a different place, to win games, lift trophies and be part of a club that will achieve a lot. It is an exciting project and I want to be at this club for a long time.”
Lewis name dropped Newcastle midfielder Joelinton in the interview, saying he asked the Brazilian international about the country prior to his move to South America. “For me, Brazil as a country is very well known for its culture, its people, the love of football, since I was a child,” he added.
“I love Brazilian football, the beach, watching Ronaldinho and other players at the World Cup. I am very proud to come to play in Brazil, I want to immerse myself in the culture myself, many athletes come to Brazil, that shows that I want to enjoy Brazilian football.
I” am a sportsman from Newcastle. I know Joelinton, Brazilians don’t need to talk about Brazil. They think Brazil is an amazing place, they are always happy. All the Brazilians I met in London, these people represent Brazil very well, I was very excited to come.”
